Aviate program changes

March 3, 2023

Introduction

Meeting our commitment to Aviate participants is a top priority at United and the program will remain an important pipeline source for our airline. Aviate continues to provide the most secure, direct path to the United flight deck. As an Aviate participant, your conditional job offer as a First Officer means that you can have confidence in your journey.

What are the Aviate program changes?

Effective March 1, 2023:

Simplified transition requirements. A single Pilot in Command (PIC) requirement replaces the 2,000 flight hours of total time (or 1,500 for those who upgraded to Captain) and two (2) year service time requirements. A bachelor's degree is no longer required to transition to United.

Aviate participants will be required to upgrade and fly as a Captain at Aviate-participating UAX carriers or Part 135 operators to transition directly to United.

  • Training failures incurred during Captain upgrade training will not count toward a participant's quantity of certified regulatory check ride failures.

Current UAX Aviate participants remain eligible to transition under legacy program requirements, or under new program requirements, whichever is faster.

  • Select UAX pilots will be required to upgrade and fly 500 PIC hours to transition under the legacy program requirements.

United start date commitment. Participants will be on property at United within four (4) months of meeting program requirements.

Part 135 direct transition to United. Participants can now transition directly to United from any Aviate-participating Part 135 operator after serving as a Captain.

For complete details regarding these program changes and transition requirements, reference the APG.

Frequently asked questions

The Aviate team recognizes that the program we designed in 2019 needs to evolve to reflect today’s hiring environment and better support you in your journey. We’ve heard your feedback and have made these changes to improve:

Transparency – By moving to a PIC requirement with a four-month transition commitment, we’re able to remove flow rates, therefore participants can better predict when they’ll start at United.

First Officer hour availability – The Captain-to-First Officer imbalance facing several carriers means that many First Officers aren’t meeting Aviate transition requirements as quickly as they’d like. United values Captain experience and these changes will ensure more hours will be available for First Officers to build experience.

See below for the outline of changes for those Aviate participants who fly with an Aviate-participating United Express (UAX) carrier effective March 1, 2023:

UAX flight hour transition requirements will require participants to upgrade and fly as a Captain:

  • Participants who opted in to Aviate while at UAX will be required to fly 1,600 Pilot in Command (PIC) hours
  • Participants who successfully interviewed to join Aviate prior to starting at UAX will be required to fly 1,200 PIC hours
  • Note: only PIC hours flown beginning March 1, 2023 and later will count toward the above requirements

Simplified transition requirements. A single PIC requirement replaces the 2,000 flight hours of total time (or 1,500 for those who upgraded to Captain) and two (2) year service time requirements. A bachelor’s degree is no longer required to transition.

United start date commitment. Participants will be on property at United within four (4) months of meeting program requirements.

Simplified transition requirements. Participants are now eligible to transition directly to United after upgrading and flying as a Captain for 1,200 PIC hours while in Aviate at any Aviate-participating Part 135 operator.

  • Previously, participants at Ameriflight & Wiggins were required to hold specific leadership roles (i.e., Chief Pilot, Director of Operations) for two (2) years to be eligible to transition directly to United.
  • Previously, participants at JSX were eligible to transition directly to United after serving as a Captain for two (2) years. The 1,200 PIC hours requirement replaces the previous two-year service time requirement.

Removal of the 18-months service time requirement for participants building experience at a Part 135 operator.

Removal of the 750-hour flight hour requirement for participants building experience at a Part 135 operator.

Participants are not required to hold a bachelor’s degree to transition to United.

Pilots who will transition after meeting PIC hours requirement: Hours flown as a Captain March 1, 2023 and later will count towards the PIC requirements.

Training failures incurred during Captain upgrade training will not count toward a participant’s quantity of Certified Regulatory Check Ride failures. United will make the final determination if a participant’s training history is satisfactory to United’s performance standards. See Chapter 4 of the APG for more details.

UAX participants do not need to make a choice between these options and can work towards both sets of requirements at the same time. Participants that were accepted into Aviate and flying at a UAX carrier with a carrier start date before March 1, 2023 are eligible to transition after meeting either set of requirements, whichever occurs faster.

Note: My Aviate, the upcoming mobile and web-based app, will allow participants to log total flight time, service time and PIC hours to easily show their progress against both set of requirements.

The estimated transition timeframes that were shared previously were determined by utilizing all UAX participants’ current flight time, program transition requirements status, and Aviate date to estimate when we believe each participant will transition to United. Please refer to our communications on those estimates.

Estimated transition timeframes were distributed based on your UAX carrier.

CommuteAir and GoJet pilots received an estimated transition timeframe on September 27, 2022.

Mesa pilots received their estimated transition timeframes on March 1, 2023.

For those pilots who have not yet received an estimated transition timeframe, and have been on property at a current Aviate-participating UAX carrier after September 27, 2022, will receive an estimated transition timeframe in the coming weeks.

Example 1: Participant meets requirements before their estimated transition timeframe

A participant who completes all transition requirements on June 1, 2023 and notifies United

  • And whose timeframe is August 2023 – October 2023
  • Should expect to be placed in class with a United start date October 31, 2023 or earlier

Example 2: Participant meets requirements within their estimated transition timeframe

A participant who completes all transition requirements on September 15, 2023 and notifies United

  • And whose timeframe is August 2023 – October 2023
  • Should expect to be placed in class with a United start date January 15, 2024, or earlier (i.e., within four (4) months from the time of notification)

Example 3: Participant meets requirements and did not receive an estimated transition timeframe

A participant who completes all transition requirements on August 12, 2023 and notifies United

  • Should expect to be placed in class with a United start date December 12, 2023, or earlier (i.e., within four (4) months from the time of notification)

We will not be sending updated transition timeframes to participants who have already received one; however, in the coming weeks we will be sending transition timeframes to those who have joined a current Aviate-participating UAX carrier after September 27, 2022.

Coming soon! After the launch of My Aviate, participants will use the My Aviate app to self-verify when they are eligible to transition. More information about My Aviate will be shared in the coming weeks.

For UAX participants who will transition after meeting the legacy program requirements (based on total flight time & service time):

Participants will be assigned a class date after they:

  • Meet all legacy transition requirements,
  • Reach the start of their transition timeframe,
  • Notify United of meeting all program requirements,
  • And receive approval from United’s Transition Board of Review.

For UAX participants who will transition after meeting the current program requirements (based on PIC hours logged March 1, 2023 or later):

Participants will be assigned a class date after they:

  • Meet the PIC hour requirement,
  • Notify United of meeting all program requirements,
  • And receive approval from United’s Transition Board of Review

For Non-UAX participants:

Participants will be assigned a class date after they:

  • Meet all transition requirements,
  • Notify United of meeting all program requirements,
  • And receive approval from United’s Transition Board of Review.

For UAX participants who will transition under the legacy program requirements (based on total flight time & service time): A participant’s position on their carrier-specific Aviate list is based on their Aviate date. The Aviate lists were used to create the estimated transition timeframes that UAX pilots received, giving priority (or an earlier transition timeframe) to participants who have an earlier Aviate date. Participants should expect to be placed in class during their estimated transition timeframe, provided they have met all legacy program requirements, subject to approval by the Transition Board of Review.

For UAX participants who will transition under the current program requirements (based on PIC hours logged March 1, 2023 or later): Because we have eliminated flow rates, the Aviate list(s) are no longer required to prioritize transition eligible participants. Instead, eligible UAX pilots will be assigned a class date within four months of meeting PIC flight hour requirements, subject to approval by the Transition Board of Review.
